Stories shape who we are, not just as individuals but as communities. They help us connect, foster understanding, and create spaces where people feel seen and heard. At First Person Project, we believe that storytelling is a powerful tool for breaking down barriers and building stronger, more compassionate communities.
The Power of Sharing Personal Experiences
Recently, I had the opportunity to share my own experiences during a Fundamentally Healthy session, and the response I received reinforced just how vital this work is. When I decided to open up about my mental health journey, I wasn’t sure how it would be received. Like many people, I had always been aware of the stigma surrounding mental health, but I also knew the power of openness in creating change.
As I spoke, I felt the usual nerves that come with vulnerability, but I reminded myself—this is why we do what we do at First Person Project.

Breaking Down Mental Health Stigma
What took me by surprise was a comment from someone following the session: “I never would have expected you to suffer with mental health like that.”
Those words hit me. They spoke volumes about how people perceive mental health and the assumptions we all make about each other. It reminded me that so many of us carry our struggles silently, often feeling like we have to put on a brave face. But in that moment, I realized something even more important—by sharing our stories, we allow others to see us fully, beyond the surface.
Storytelling Creates Understanding
That conversation reaffirmed something I’ve always believed: storytelling creates understanding. When we share our experiences, we challenge stereotypes, break down stigma, and remind each other that no one is alone in their struggles.
My experience during this session reinforced why we need more spaces for open, honest storytelling. We need to keep sharing, listening, and encouraging each other to speak up—because the more we do, the stronger our communities become.

Creating Change Through Connection
We never truly know what someone else is going through, but by sharing our stories, we create bridges of understanding. And in those moments of connection, real change happens.
At First Person Project, we’re committed to continuing this work—bringing people together, one story at a time.
