Community Memories: Text

The community memories project was created through workshop led sessions around connection, community and creation. The local community of L8 were invited to take part in place-making and community connection sessions which explored the health benefits of being connected to others. Each participant used photography and story-telling

“I was lucky to be involved in this community project a couple of years ago. I appreciate it so much as I know where it came from, who did it and the effort behind it. It reminds me of my first couple of summers in Liverpool, cherished memories. I love to see how much it keeps changing and evolving according to what the neighbourhood needs”

"I have memories in the library on the top of Lodge Lane. I read all the detective novels. Back in 1983, many years before I came to live in Toxteth I did a 3-mile road race around Sefton Park. I did not win the race but I completed it in 13 ½ minutes. I now join a walking group that frequently visits the park today. I remember going to firework displays in the park with a girlfriend. Working on a children’s summer camp, one year, I got stuck on the playground climbing frame. I got up alright but could not get down"

“The aviary was a curved building with rustic rockwork arches within a large cage. There was parakeets, budgerigars, African greys and Amazon parrots. The plans for the aviary was drawn up by a French landscape architect who won a design prize in 1867. They induced peacocks July 1990. The aviary was closed in 1997. Myself used to go and see the aviary with my dad when we was younger”

"I have a memory of Granby Toxteth because they take children to museums and along the way they learn. They are really understanding and welcoming people. I have a memory of my first time coming to Granby and we went to a theme park and I had an amazing time"

“This path is one of the most attractive assets in the city. No matter what is done to it you really cannot ruin the astonishing combination of the trees and the houses at either side. A stroll through its length can feel endless and magical, it is an experience”

“This place is a hidden gem in the groves. We were lucky enough to go to an open day event they had and we managed to get a key of the lock to access it. We haven’t really grown anything yet but we have helped tidying up and joined other community events they organise beautiful space and the perfect excuse to meet people”
