What is your role and day-to day activities at First Person Project?

I am a Project Coordinator and am currently part time at FPP. Our daily and weekly timetable varies constantly which I love, but throughout all projects we do, I help individuals within the community with their mental health, improving social development and social cohesion in the process. Within this, I help people grow, bring others alike together, help people develop useful skills, and tackle societal stigmas. At FPP, we promote socially progressive mental health, which improves social cohesion and development across Liverpool City Region, this is tied into everything we do.

What connection/experience have you had with mental health?

I have struggled with depression and anxiety (mainly depression) for most of my life. During my teen years I started drinking a lot and doing lots of drugs (mainly weed) to try and avoid the intense feelings and emotions I had at the time. I felt confused, lost and depressed. Over 5 years ago (2019), I got arrested for drink driving in Liverpool which was a big turning point for me. I had to accept the consequences of losing my licence and job at the time which relied on me having a license. I chose to come clean with my family with my situation, and decided I didn't want to continue down the path I was heading down as I was miserable and knew it would only get worse. I then chose to go back to my counsellor I had been seeing previously and give it another go, to help me get back on my feet. My journey was by no means over there, I am far from where I was then but my healing/development journey is evergoing. It has not been a linear journey since then either, I still have my ups and downs and still struggle with what life throws at me, but who doesn't. My experiences and growth over the years allow me to be vulnerable and empathetic with others struggling with mental health as I have been in that position myself many times. In my work, I focus on spreading compassion, positivity and empathy, as these are things I have needed most and have slowly implemented along my journey.

What connection/experience have you had with mental health?
If you had a day off to recharge your mental health, what would your ideal day look like? What activities would you enjoy?

My ideal day to recharge would be having a 'lazy day' and spending some quality time with either my girlfriend, my family or my close friends. I'd love to have a lie in first off to get some needed rest and to start the day slow. Then I may do some house chores such as cleaning and washing. Then I may grab a coffee, go on a nice walk and have some nice food. A chill day for me is taking things a bit slower, spending quality time with people close to me, and having a bit of alone time to watch some car youtube videos or a film to relax in the evening. These days for me are crucial for my well-being, and allow me to fill up my 'cup' as it were :) Sadly I think life can be so fast paced in the world today, and sometimes it passes us by without us noticing. These days for me allow me to take a step back, reflect and see the bigger picture also.

What's the most memorable piece of advice you've received regarding mental health, and how has it influenced your approach?

This is a great question I feel I don't really have a distinct answer to lol! However, I would just say that 'Rome wasn't built in a day', is something I bare in mind when it comes to my mental health. I personally can be incredibly hard on myself, can be very analytical, self-sabotaging, comparing myself to others and beating myself up. So, this phrase reminds me that I have come a hell of a long way already and I am on my own journey, which is not a fast, linear process. In my case, I find reminding myself of the bigger picture helps keep me content and positive.
